At-home checks (and where they fall short)

Home tests are useful as a first screen, but understand what they can and can’t do. They reliably catch cheap fakes made of brass, steel, or lead. They do not reliably catch a well-made counterfeit — especially one cored with tungsten, whose density is almost identical to gold.

The magnet test

Gold is not magnetic. A strong neodymium magnet should feel nothing when held near a genuine coin or bar. If the piece sticks or drags, it contains ferromagnetic metal and is fake. The catch: passing the magnet test only rules out iron-based fakes. Brass, lead, and tungsten aren’t magnetic either, so a “pass” proves very little on its own.

The “ping” (ring) test

Real gold and silver produce a long, high, bell-like ring when balanced on a fingertip and tapped with another coin. Base metals give a short, dull thud. Apps exist that analyze the frequency. It’s a quick gut-check, but it’s subjective, it can be faked by skilled counterfeiters, and it tells you nothing about a sealed bar.

Precise weight and dimensions

This is the strongest at-home method. Every genuine bullion product has published specifications — exact weight in grams or troy ounces, plus diameter and thickness. A 1 oz Gold Eagle should weigh 31.1 grams (one troy ounce ≈ 31.1g, heavier than a regular ounce) at its stated dimensions, every time. Use a jeweler’s scale accurate to 0.01g and a digital caliper. A fake that gets the weight right will usually be the wrong size, because no other affordable metal matches gold’s density (19.3 g/cm³). The serious exception is tungsten (19.25 g/cm³), which can match both weight and size — which is why measurement alone can’t fully clear a large bar.

Fisch and Sigma verifiers

The Fisch is a precision gauge that checks a coin’s weight and dimensions simultaneously; a genuine coin balances and slips through its slot, a fake fails on size or weight. The Sigma Metalytics Precious Metal Verifier uses electromagnetic waves to read conductivity below the surface, so it can flag a gold-plated tungsten core that a scale would miss. Both are excellent middle-ground tools for active buyers, but they cost real money and still have limits — the Sigma reads only to a certain depth, so very thick bars need other methods.

Professional methods

When the stakes are high enough, hand the piece to equipment and people who do this for a living. A reputable dealer or coin shop can usually run these on the spot.

XRF analyzer. X-ray fluorescence reads the elemental composition of the surface in seconds and is non-destructive. It’s the industry workhorse for confirming purity. Its blind spot is depth: XRF reads only the outer layer, so a thick gold plating over a tungsten core can fool it unless paired with another test.

Ultrasound testing. Ultrasonic gauges measure how fast sound travels through the metal, which differs sharply between gold and tungsten even when density matches. This is the go-to for catching tungsten-cored bars that defeat weight, size, and XRF checks.

Assay. A formal assay — fire assay or acid testing — is the definitive answer because it samples the actual metal. It’s slower, sometimes mildly destructive, and usually reserved for large bars or estate lots, but it’s the gold standard for resolving any doubt before a major transaction.

Security features built into modern bullion

Mints have made authentication easier by engineering anti-counterfeit features directly into the product. Learning to read them is a free, fast layer of defense.

  • Maple Leaf radial lines. The Royal Canadian Mint’s Gold Maple Leaf carries precise micro-engraved radial lines that shimmer at specific angles and are extremely hard to replicate, plus a laser-etched micro-mark of a maple leaf with the last two digits of the year.
  • PAMP Veriscan. PAMP Suisse bars use a surface-fingerprint technology — each bar’s microscopic texture is unique and registered, so a free app or PAMP’s system can confirm a specific bar is the genuine registered one.
  • Serial numbers and assay cards. Reputable minted bars ship sealed in tamper-evident “CertiCard” or assay-card packaging showing a unique serial number, weight, purity, and the assayer’s signature. A broken seal or a missing card on a bar that should have one is a reason to slow down. (Sovereign coins like the Eagle and Krugerrand don’t use serial numbers — their security lives in their exact specs and design detail instead.)

When to get a piece professionally tested

You don’t need to assay every coin. Match the level of scrutiny to the risk:

  • Private and peer-to-peer sales. No return policy, no reputation on the line — the burden of proof is entirely yours. Verify in person, ideally at a coin shop with an XRF machine.
  • Deals that look unusually good. Bullion trades in a narrow band around spot for a reason. A “1 oz gold coin” priced well below the metal’s melt value is almost always a fake, a plated piece, or a scam. Real gold rarely sells at a steep discount.
  • Large bars. Kilo bars and other big formats are the prime target for tungsten cores, because a single fake is worth tens of thousands of dollars and the easy tests don’t catch it. For anything large from a non-dealer source, insist on ultrasound or assay.

Avoid the channels where fakes concentrate

The single most effective thing you can do is buy where counterfeits can’t easily hide. Amazon, eBay, and general online marketplaces are high-risk for fake bullion. These platforms mix legitimate sellers with counterfeiters and overseas drop-shippers, the listings look identical, and recourse after the fact is limited.
